with the firewall out and just driving wt 20mph with the windows up you would be suprised the amount of air that moves through the engine compartment! for the moment with the engine ECM controlling the fan it works fine the donor Trofeo drove and worked fione it just was crunched a bit, everything works fine and the coolant temp sensor is working fine as the snapon scanntool has shown us (the ALDL for the rear engine is on the passenger side the front engines ALDL is on the drivers side) so we will just be letting the ECM handle that!
Durring the video taped WOT runs the fan was in just not hooked up yet but we didnt have any problems in fact the front engines upper rad hose was hotter than the 3800's.
we initially were going to put a skirt/air deflector under the rear radiator for airflow but I dont think it is necesary but at highway speeds it may not get the same amount of airflow but then the rad fan can take over, we shall see...trial and error.
In my new shop it looks like soon we will have a mandrel bender and up to 5 inch dies for the local trucks, but this should let us finish the exhaust system once my new boss gets it.

Cant wait to get this darn cage! but supposedly it will be tuesday.... the same day I start my new job...out in rockford IL! about 60+ miles from where I am now...
who's gonna argue with 25$ an hr book time wages and a huge shop that will let me work on my toys during the weekends!!!
WWOOOoooo!

The possibility of owning my basses old house is even better! 2 story with full basment and a two car garage! plus when he lived there he had 36 cars in his driveway/backyard...

this is a good opportunity for me, very good, and working with a boss who also dragraces will be fun! he has a mid 11 second SBC malibu that needs a cage before he can take it back to the track, the reason he's buying the mandrel bender...

wish me luck! James

WOOOOOooooo!
GIT R DUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

finished welding in the cage (I love TIG!!!) we welded it in as an 8 point without the halo bar and front down legs (go through dash and we dont have time to redo the whole dash! YET!)
Boy doya want to talk about stiff!
Got the 5 point harnesses installed! camlocks are so easy to buckle and unbuckle
besides shattering the rear window taking it out (recomend not prying and using a sawzall to remove windows :P) we have a new tinted one to replace that old weld spattered one...so no big deal just had to vacume up allot of glass lol

we drove her down to the local machine shop and met an engineer (PhD) who drove out just to look at the 442....
"well it looks like you guys built her to take a crash at 200mph!" he said that we could have gotten by with less steel but that the engineering was beutifull...then we told him it was all by eye and with no blueprints etc.
his eye's -> :o
we did a few blasts down the local road and I did almost a 180* turn in her in a parking lot by just mashing the pedal and turning! that was fun!!!!!!!!!!
need some bleach next time!

boy is this car fun! gotta love the reactions "youve got two engines in there....like noone's ever heard of Hurst "Hairy" Oldsmobile....we are the sequel!

keep ya updated!

James and Al and the 442....

94 Olds Cutlass supreme (bought used) loan/paid ~$5000
work/parts replaced on stock cutlass, front struts, brakes, 3100 gasket set (porting and polishing/backcut valves = ~ $400
full performance rebuild of 4T60E trans with my shift "kit" modifications, and 500 rpm higher stall convertor = $1800
total (so far): $7200

PLUS (to make it the 442)

90 toronado trofeo-free (well gas to haul it to Al's = 10$
welding gas/wire/steel/grinder wheels/plasma cutter consumables and other supplies = ~$300-400
JEGS, Aeromotive 450 lb hr 100 psi fuel pump and stainless braided lines and AN-8 and 6 fittings, alum hard line, 19 gal fuel cell = ~ $750
misc bolts, wires (have a couple barrels of TXL high grade wire from swapmeet-40$), switches, gauges etc. = ~ $75
14 ft Morse shifter cable (custom ends) = $100
custom made (4th generation) rear engine throttle cable = $35
two reman axles, and full gasket set for 3800 (from when we ported and polished etc) and trans filter/gasket = ~ $300
350 sbc radiator = free, hoses = free
new rear struts/brakes (for front of trofeo-installed in rear of 442) = $300
Flomaster 2 chamber muffler (for front engine-rear is open) and custom (by us) exhaust = $100
and the newest stuff...
JEGS 10 point CNC mandrel bent mild steel rollcage = $220
JEGS, pair of G-Force 5 point camlock racing harnesses SFI 16.1 = $200
JEGS, pair of G-force Graphix SA2000 racing helmets (he had to get one fer the wife-he wants her to give him head while she's wearing hers, lol) = $400
Total (for 442 conversion): ~ $2890 and maybe a bit more that i am forgetting so..... $3000

Whole project total (so far) = ~$10,200 for a car that's 0-70 mph is only .1 seconds slower than a 99 Corvette Hardtop at a WAY cheaper price-sleeper baby!!!!

I figure another 2-3 thousand for the Turbocharger/intercooler/plumbing, MegaSquirt DIY EFI, and SI and SII Hybrid project/parts for the rear engine......
should really wick-up the power!

Not bad fer a couple of rednecks....
Redneck Engine-uity LOL

James

Well....
WOOOOT!!!

Well Al and I are back and guess what the 442's best time was?
13.81 at just over 98 mph!!!!
just under 3 seconds improvment over the 16.5 BRE time (Before Rear Engine)!!
not bad for a $3000 mod....

had her looking pretty good but didnt have the interior all sorted out the new firewall was owning us till the last minute that we loaded her onto the trailer...

looks like everyone still thinks we are insane  but we had no problems on the drive from the hotel to the track we pulled strong all the way to 115mph where the 3800 was just shoving the speedlimited 3100 past 108 mph...talk about a unique sound! WOT! :D we were partially deaf by the time we got to the track
the first run down the 1/4 netted us a 14 second flat pass and the engine's werent going to WOT! looks like it's time for the 5th/6th reincarnation of the rear throttle cable too bad it was so hot out otherwise we would have run a 13.7 fer sure!
Not bad for a stock looking 94 Olds....SLEEPER!
Al got called an @sshole by an Impala owner who sid he'd race us...lined up and Al took him by over 4 seconds! found out later that he evedently he was the only one there who didnt know we had two engine's he just thought we were a loud 3100  I can only imagine what was going through his mind as Al pulled a 1.9 60 ft and left him behind  right after that run he asked us what we were running...."two engine's" him-> he thought we were insane too...LOL
We are real glad that we went! we had a blast along the others!
boy though it was definatly a $300 dollar trip but worth every minute of it
13.81!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so who wants to check out the 13 second 442 at the next minimeet?

Thank you Germ and Manticore UMM3 was a blast! next year a Turbo and other work should let us skip the 12 second club and go straight to the 11's!!!!

James, Al, Amanda, and of course the 422!

WTG. Real numbers are what it's all about.

I don't imagine DrJay showed up.

I just realized, you just posted numbers, and DrJay still has not.

I guess since he spent $12,000 on his engine, he doesn't need to reveal any numbers.

Regards, Norm

You've posted the numbers and they are good enough for me.
Scanned timeslips are to convince non believers, they are not necessary here.

Not saying don't post, just not necessary.

I have finally finished the 442 Vid with footage from UMM3....
425ci - 4 wheel drive - 2 engines
PB of 13.81 at just over 98 mph with 1.9s 60 foot times
and this was on a 90* day with close to 60% humidity!
3100 V6 in the front and a 3800 V6 in the back
both factory stock except for porting work and some of my own trans mods

she is our modern version of the original Hurst "Hairy" Olds 442 that had TWO blown 425 ci V8's and could roast the tires the whole way down the track!

here it is....its much cleaner than this...putfile must be compressing it...

whatcha think? 8)

awesome... I watched all 10 minutes! That must be a total shock to someone who thinks there is only a 3100!

Sounds like you got the shifting of the two trannies pretty well synchronized, I remember they used to shift at different times. Thats awesome!!! Good work!!!

what are both of your torque converters stalling at? Sounds like you need a little more stall but its hard to tell from the videos. What about running the S/C 3800 out of those pontiacs?

the front seems to flash stall at about 220-2300rpm (aftermarket stall converter from a quad4 application when we did a performance rebuild on the tranny) the rear is the stock 90 Olds Toronado Trofeo conveter...

she will be getting two 3800;s and a turbocharger on each...
since zzp performance and Stattama racing have high 9 second 750+Hp cars...we should be able to get 400-450Hp outta each fairly easily...
especially if the SI/SII Hybrid works out...

Awww Yeah!

13.81 at 98.21 mph in a 4330lb boat isnt anything to sneeze at... :D

James
