My transmission is leaking fluid, and shifting a little funkily. The tranny fluid looks dirty. There's an AAMCO close to my house and I'm thinking of taking it there for service, either their Safeguard service, or if it really needs it, their Reconditioning (rebuild & clean) service. Has anyone here had either of these services done? How much does it cost (and was it worth it)? Thanks,

Barry

Hi schippa2, hello All

Aamco shops are franchises and quality can vary from one to the next.
Here in the L. A. Basin, Aamco is not well thought of in the car community.

I agree with Norm, you might get service ranging from Great to Terrrible. You might do better by just looking around, asking questions from people in the car business and hobby, and actually going to a few local shops and simply talking to them. Observe how they do things, see how clean their shop is, how professional their mechanics appear, etc.

Maybe I will check out some other places. There doesn't seem to be any Cooters in my area (though I hear they make the best mechanics), but there's a guy named Jimmy who owns a shop & a Sunoco down the road. I'm not sure he could handle a transmission job though - one time my dad took his truck there to be inspected and he didn't get it back for 4 months. Great, cheap service, but slow slow slow!

maybe ask Jimmy for advice, guys in the business will have heard all kinds of horror stories, or success stories from people that brought their cars to other places in the area.

I talked to my dad about it last night, and he suggested that "we" jack the car up and take a look to see exactly where in the trans the leak is coming from, because it might be something "we" can fix. "We" usually means that he lays under the car and does the fun stuff, while cursing and asking me for wrench sockets. I do trust him, he has been working on cars for a long long time, but memories of the last time we tried to fix a transmission come to mind and I think it would be easier to take it somewhere.
