Ciera, its surprising that the ABS works, because its designed to default to regular brakes and kick out the ABS when the service lite is tripped. I'm suspecting you may have a wheel speed sensor going or gone bad, and if its an intermittent problem, that may be why the ABS did work...this time. I would at least get it in and get it checked out to see what exactly the problem is, becaus one of these times the ABS WONT work when youre expecting it to, although as i said, its designed to cut out the ABS and leave you with regular brakes, like in a non-ABS equipped car, in the event of a system failure. so you will still have brakes, just not antilock brakes. I cant rememer right off if your car has the wheel speed sensors independent of the bearing(hub) assemblies, or if they're integrated into the assemblies. If they are in fact part of the hub assemblies, you'll have to buy a whole complete hub assembly to get the sensor replaced...NOT real cheap...on the average of $100-300 EACH, depending on the particular vehicle..just did one in a 99 chevy truck yesterday...that one was like $225....a scan tool with ABS capabilities will be able to read the codes, and if it is a wheel speed sensor, will tell you which one it is thats gone bad..normally you cant get codes out of ABS stuff without the proper software and scan tool. It may also be a false code, as the GM cars tend to pop false ABS codes on occasion, especially if the front wheels spin at different speeds ( burning out, spinning on gravel, one wheel spins while the other stays at the same speed)....the ABS will sometimes set a code if one wheel spins faster or slower than the other 3....the wheel sensors are also used in newer cars to tell if a tire is going low ( on cars equipped with a low tire lite), by sensing wheel speed on all 4 positions, comparng data, and popping the low tire lite if one tire spins slower than the other 3 for a period of time, due to a tire being low, and not spinning the same amount of RPM as the other 3. Welcome to ABS and wheel speed sensors 101 :P

Dont worry about your ABS. Do like the rest of us; open the door and drag your feet. This works 4x as good if you have a 4 door with passengers.

Sounds like a censor. My '96 had the same thing happen last year. The brakes were fine, just the light was on. Just as annoying as the "Low Coolant" light I've had for about a year now. Another sensor that was replaced when I bought it in mid '98, and it seems to be bad again.
