Car Info:
1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera v6 engine.

Please offer and help that u can. I am getting 40 PSI when I test my fuel pressure and I asked a few garages and they said it was my fuel pressure regulator.. Can anyone else tell me if that is correct or if its something else or COULD be something else. This is my problem with the car overall. If I dont start it at all for like all night and i go to start it in the morning, then it takes me a while to start it. I mean itll backfire and and make noises and attempt to start but wont for awhile. Then after awhile itll start. And itll start good for the rest of the day. See when I go to slow down or stop completely, it stalls out. If I start it and put it in drive or reverse, theres a good 90% chance itll stall right when I do it or touch the gas pedal. I have no clue what is wrong with it. Its beginning to be a pain, since i bought a book, and replaces many parts to this thing, and it still acts up. I was told either the Fuel Pump or the Fuel Pressure Regulator. As I said, the pressure test indicates im getting 40 PSI, when I was told my car is only suppose to have 16 PSI max.. Please if anyone knows what could be the problem, please let me know. I need feedback cause as of right now, I am lost.
Also my last thing, that I cant understand is, AutoZone told me there was 5 different fuel pressure requlators for my type of car, and to see which one i need, i need to find the actual fuel pressure regulator on my car, and get numbers off it. Can anyone kindly tell me where i can find this fuel pressure regulator on a 95 oldsmobile cutlass ciera?
Thanks a lot.
Jason

On the internet, engine problems and other things are hard to diagnose. If this were a typical problem with them, it would be eaiser to say, "These are know for...." But when it comes to odd problems such as this, anything in the fuel system is subject to suspicion since one can't see it or look at it. If you have high pressure it could be a number of different things. How is your fuel filter? New? Change that first and test again. Go from the bottom up as far as simplicity goes. What I mean by that is start simple. look for pinched fuel lines, corroded steel lines etc. From there, look at the fuel condition/quality. Is the pump pumping the proper volume of fuel? It could be a plugged "sock" in the gas tank. It could also be an injector sticking and causing pressure to build up in the system. It could be a bunch of things, but I hope this helps.

Ive changed the fuel filter, and still had these problems. Can u tell me what my type of car, is suppose to have for fuel pressure in PSI? Someone said 16, and someone told me that the 40 PSI i was getting for a reading, was correct for that type of car.. Also do you know where the Fuel Pressure Regulator is located on that type of car? Ive checked under the plenum between the fuel rails.. It wasnt there.
Please if you know, let me know.
Thanks

Fuel System Pressure should be between 40.5 to 47.0 PSI, this is with the engine OFF, ignition ON, and fuel pump running.

Now, with the engine ON, it is supposed to be lower.

How did you test it? Have you had the computer scanned for codes? Just because the service engine soon light isn't on, doesn't mean there aren't any codes.

Now, if that reading is while the engine is on, then it probably is a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Do you know what the fuel rail is? The injectors are all connected to it, the fuel pressure regulator is connected to it....it's how it regulates the fuel pressure to the injectors.
