Hey there! I'm Joel from central IL and I bought my Olds last Feb. It's an '89 Eighty-Eight Royale Brougham. When I bought it it only had 106k on the odometer and now has 115000 miles (exactly, just rolled over today). Even though I haven't had this car for very long, I LOVE it and believe it is the best car I have ever owned, even though I am an AMC man by trade. (I have a 1968 AMC Rebel project car in my garage.) My question involves the engine codes. For a while now, I have had the check engine light go on occasionally, but only stays on for a minute or so and then goes out. It seems to come on when the engine is warming up, but not at full temperature. Well, the other day it came on and stayed on. The car is still running well, except when I first start it up in the morning. It runs slightly rough, and has some hesitation when I hit the gas. It is OK when the engine is hot. Today I ran the codes and got a 13 and a 41. From my Haynes manual, I know the 13 is the O2 sensor, which makes sense judging from my symptoms, but the 41 I am confused about. The manual gives 3 different 41 codes, one for a carburated car (which I don't have), one for fuel-injected models, and one for 3.8L cars. I'm not sure which one it assumes I have, since I thought that I had the 3800 motor instead of the 3.8L. For the middle one, it says "Cylinder select error - MEM-CAL or ECM problem), and for 3.8L engine it says its the Cam sensor circuit. Could anyone give me a hand with interpretation? Thanks!
Joel N.

Just as Adam noted in his explanation, as of 1989, all Eighty-Eight models came standard with the 3800 engine. Does your engine have the 3800 engraving on the top of it? And if that doesn't convince you, check the 8th letter in your VIN. It should be a C.
Code 41: A broken interrupter magnet could be a possibility.
Take a look at this:

Hope this helps.
