Hi, I'm new to this forum and i know very little about cars so be gentle.

My car is and 1979 cutlass supreme, and occasionaly when I drive I can feel this weird slipping in the back end and a lot of stuttering as well. It feels like when I give it gas, it just spins up but never gets to the wheels then it will catch and shake the car and lurch forward.

I figured out if I drive in reverse maybe 100ft it fixes the problem but not permanently, obviously or else i wouldn't be here.

Check the fluid level.

If it is where it should be, take it to a trans specialist for an accurate diagnosis.
