The problem will be in between the light, and the aldl port, or between the port and the computer, unless it draws its voltage from the computer. You are missing a connection. You need to check for voltage at the light socket first, with the diagnostic key plugged in. If you have power, replace the bulb. If you don't have power, check the wiring for damage, or loose grounds.
Let us know when you find it so we can give you a proper send-off-

I would have thought, one of the "techs", you work/worked with, would have "bailed you out" by now.

Then the problem is from the port to the light.
It cant be all ok, and not work. If it won't go into diagnostic mode, then something is not right.

Try doing it manually, with a paper clip- 88Delta88 wrote: 88delta88 wrote: if you have a 1990, you've got the version before OBDII. It is called ALDL, there are major differences, say, if you wanted to go buy a scanner. You can short two pins on the connector (under your dash, by the fuse panel drivers side). here is a diagram of the connector, and the two pins to short out. Do this with key off, and then turn the key to IGNITION, do not start the car. Better yet, read this page for any further instructions: GM Malfunctions
Full thread can be seen here
If it won't do it manually, then you know you have either a bad connection, or a bad ECM.

If you can get codes out of it with the paper clip, then the scanner isn't working right, and neither is the cable/computer.
If it doesn't work, then you know you need a new ECM.
So, when should we plan your going away party?

If you know it all, then why ask? You never said you tried to do it manually. My suggestion empirically eliminates both your scan key and your computer, and will tell you if it will work, by flashing the MIL.
If you think you know where to go with it, then do it- then go away.
I could give a shit if you ever get it fixed.
