1986 delta 88 royal, 3.8L V6, vin code 3:

Here's the situation.

On a cold start, the engine high idles fairly high. It will not come out of high idle until:

a.) I shut off the car after letting in run for 3 minutes or so tell its good and hot, and then restart it.

b.) I put it in drive, at which point the car moves on its own after i left off the break and not put my foot on the gas at all. Usually in 30 seconds to a minute, the idle wil come down and the car will behave as it should.

If the car has been driven, recently (say in a time frame of 30 minutes or an hour) the car will start and idle as it should. If it's been two hours or so, the car will be back at high idle again.

Any ideas?

>>checked the IAC valve?

Checked it this morning, its practically brand new. The throttle body does need to be cleaned though.

Had a mechanic look at it a few weeks ago, and he said he looked for vaccum leaks but couldn't find any.

Did you look at its appearance, or did you test it?

With the ignition on, use a meter (or test light) to verify that it has power. If it does, unplug the power source and start the engine. Note the difference in idle speed with it disconnected. If it changes, the valve is working

If it does not, you will to test several supply circuits.

Your Factory Service Manual is one of the most valuable tools you can own.

No need to test it now,I just put a brand new one in anyway for the hell of it. At this point, im doing process of eliminationi by changing sensors and parts.

Is there an RPM sensor in this thing anywhere?

Not an original concept, but it does seem to be very popular among beginners.

CPS (crankshaft position sensor).

Don't forget to reset the adaptive stragey of the PCM, by disconnecting the battery negative cable.
Adaptive strategy can sometimes make your new replacement parts act like the defective ones you just removed.

Your CKP (crankshaft position sensor) is a vital input to the computer, and the engine will not start if its defective.
Your engine will also stall if the CKP signal is lost (quite common on 3.8L)
