I just bought the car with a check engine light on (Yeah, I know... I live on the edge, what can I tell ya...) Alldata tells me that the paperclip trick doesn't work on a '96. Is this true? I have a friend with a scanner, but I'd like to read the codes ASAP so I can get whatever parts I'll need before I bring the car to him.

Codes can only tell you where to start looking, not what to replace. Once you know where to look, Alldata can lead you to the source of the problem.
