the best tool is a rubber hose...I have a short piece of heater hose that I got from NAPA. Just put it up to your ear and listen to different areas of the engine...you will eventually find where the noise is coming from. It also helps to put an ear plug in the other ear.

What kind of noise is it making?

A good mechanic stetoscope is the best tool to pinpoint strange noises. It's like you doctor's stetoscope, but have a long pin instead of the cup. You can have this at any auto part store for around 20$. I have one and it's one of the tool I use the most.
