While driving to work this morning I noticed that my volts were reading a little low (hovering around 12v instead of 14v.) When I got to work I shut the ignition off and noticed that my GEN light came on. I've never seen the GEN light on while the key is in the off position before so I thought this was odd. About 4 hours later I went to go out to do a couple errands and the battery was dead. I jumped it and drove it home. Nothing looks out of place under the hood... the alternator belt is tight, all wires connected to the alternator appear to be secure, so I just disconnected the battery and headed back to work (in my truck this time  )

What do you think? My first guess would be a bad connection or bad alternator but the fact that the GEN light is lit with the ignition off throws me for a loop. :-k

Problem fixed...

I replaced the alternator and all of the symptoms went away.

Go figure
