Everyone, check this link out. VERY intriguing.

Acetone Fuel Additive

Could it actually work, to the extent they describe? I've heard this from a few different sources, and now a scientific description of why it works. I think I'm going to try it this weekend... :-)

Actually doesn't work. I've heard of people doing this and actually got worse gas mileage. Plus, they tested it on Mythbusters as well and they saw like a 2mpg decrease.

IMO, it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Heres a topic that was recently hashed out over on ROP...

Hope that clears things up!

Hi 88delta88, andrewk, hello everyone,

I prefer to take it apart at it's source, whenever possible.

Quote:
........ I've heard this from a few different sources, and now a scientific description of why it works........

How scientific can it be if it won't stand up to a couple of simple questions.

http://pesn.com wrote:
........ Surface tension presents an obstacle to vaporization. For instance the energy barrier from surface tension can sometimes force water to reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit before it vaporizes. Similarly with gasoline ........

How much below that 300° does gasoline vaporize? What is the temp in a typical combustion chamber?

There is a wealth of misinformation on the internet. Tenth post down on this thread is a good example.

........ That's a North American Rockwell, promotional film from the mid seventies.

It was done after North American Aviation merged with Rockwell-Standard (owner of Aero Commander) in 1967 to become North American Rockwell, and before Rockwell sold it's General Aviation division to Gulfstream in 1980, its Sabreliner division to Sabreliner Corp in 1983 and the rest of it's aerospace interests to Boeing in 1996.

The product was well ahead of it's time, and I've often wondered how Boeing put it to use, and how the design has evolved.

Regards, Norm

Just saw the mythbusters episode.
They tested it on a cutlass supreme for carbureted engine and some older fuel injected toyota econobox thing. Both lost MPG as said, they also tested those magnets that snap on the fuel line....no change.

I saw that too, they also had some "super carburetor" they purchased. Worked like a regular carb, and had even lower efficiency than what came in the car.

Hard to imagine that whoever was selling those is still in business, although I guess there are alot of suckers in the world.

As said in the show, the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine just won't allow for any extreme increase in MPG.

I wonder what percentage of the fuel used in a typical car is turned into heat as opposed to what percentage is actually turned into kinetic energy (moving the car)

Here's a college students web site....

http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/102spring20 ... 20Main.htm

Not sure how accurate it is, but it's a good read.....

This means that for a stock engine, only 20% of the power in fuel combustion is effective.

Link dont work!...So..What if we could increase it to 50%?....How much more power would be useful?...How could we do that increase?

Here's a reliable source.

Quote:
The efficiencies of good modern Otto-cycle engines range between 20 and 25 percent—in other words, only this percentage of the heat energy of the fuel is transformed into mechanical energy.
