No way in hell. At least how it sits. You would have to drop the compression ration in the 7.5- 8 :1 range for a forced induction setup. That engine is probably somewhere in the 9-10 :1 range, but I am not sure. Do you really need forced induction though?

Yes. I know a good 455 is good enough, but forced induction will really make it scream, make it one of a kind, which is what I am looking for, or am I just too much over my head??

I don't know what a "slap shifter" is.

This is his.

Aftermarket shifters, have no effect on performance.

Yes, a TH400 is an automatic.

Doesn't your TH400 shift while you cruise? Mine does.

Assuming it would even run, grenade would be more accurate word.

One of a kind? With "off the shelf" parts? If it were that easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it?

You are. Here is an example:

Instead of asking about his statement (in order get some education on the subject) you chose to disregard it, in favor of,

a daydream.

Hey guys, this any good?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OLDS-455 ... dZViewItem

What would I have to do to this to get 600 horses out of it?

For $1700.00 I would expect the cheapest possible "offshore" parts, and as many shortcuts in the machining process as they can get away with.

For a quality rebuild, I would expect to spend at least that much for parts and the same, or more, for machine work. For more power, the the price (parts and labor) will go up accordingly. Of course, my standards are higher than most.

GraveReaper0 wrote:

Exactly the same as you would if it was a $100.00 core.

Ok, so that's a no no. That would also be helpful coupe.

getting sidetracked here, but yesterday I just found out my trans is fuc_ed up, so need a new one. Putting in a th350 in place of the 200R4. 800 buks for everything. And another 700 for the engine repairs, some mickey mouse motherfuc_er put the engine together and completely messed it up. But in a couple weeks I should have it back all fixed up and running like a champ, will take pics. :D

Anytime the price is more than right, there is a reason.

Unlike the above Ebay seller, a Pep Boys remanufactured engine should have a warranty.

Back on topic, this situation is a great opportunity for you to learn as much as you can, about how, and why, it happened. The knowledge you gain, will help your understanding of your 455 project.

So you're saying buy the block from a retailer? Or do they sell rebuild engines?

No.

Who?

You have an engine that was purchased from Pep Boys. It was not assembled correctly. It should have a warranty. Check it out.

I am here to give an adult, information that will enable that adult to think for him/her self.

Only the block is from PepBoys, not the whole engine, no warranty, if it had one I would've known already. You under estimate people a little too much.

455 Olds & Trans 4sale

This guy sounds a bit vague for a description, and the price is just too damn cheap, but who knows... Might be worth an email? Since you need a trans also I thought of you, gravereaper when I saw it.

The description reads that the motor was rebuilt with an "RV Cam" .30 over in 1989. Thats quite a while ago, so who knows. Only communication with the owner would tell...

Just an idea.

The parts that are on topic, apply here as well.

Like the TO in the 350 Olds link, he might not know any more than he posted. The seller should have more.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

The poster doesn't. Hopefully, the seller does.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

If the seller wrote the ad, maybe he doesn't know any more.

88delta88 wrote:

$1K + shipping = Cheap? Maybe, if the workmanship and parts are shown to be of high quality.

Keep in mind, he just bought a "rebuilt" with only 1400 miles.

88delta88 wrote:

"RV" = Recreational vehicle = Motorhome.

Those grinds were designed for that application, in the early '70s, to get maximum power and fuel mileage from the low compression engines of that era.

.03 = standard overbore. Says nothing about the quality of the machine work, or the replacement parts.

88delta88 wrote:

If, they know what they have, I agree.

88delta88 wrote:

It cannot be anything less than educational.

GraveReaper0: It might be a good deal in disguise. See what you can find out, and report back. Just keep in mind, it's a stock rebuild, at best.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

'72 Olds = low compression from the factory. IIRC, the Vista is an A body. If so, the 400 would have the short tailshaft and would fit in the "G" body.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:
........ 30K miles since a rebuild in 1989 ........

At 30K, a quality rebuild will still be in better condition than when it left the factory, in '72.

Not so, with a cheap remanufacture.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

Other than, it's lighter than cast iron, it doesn't tell us anything.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:
........ Compression is 10.5 to 1........

Not a chance. Cast replacement pistons can be less than 8 to 1. Last ones I checked were 7.8 with factory deck and stock "C" combustion chambers.

The good news is, The cam matches the CR, and it will run on 87 unleaded.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

?

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

As in the 350 Olds link, the combo may be worth more than the vague discription implies. We'll never know unless we get more information.

WKS*Benzilla wrote:

First question is: where is he, and what's the shipping cost to my zip code?

Second: Why was a good running combo pulled?
