I am pretty sure the 3.8 and 3.3 are layed out SIMILARLY... Not positive.
Anyways, With mine (i replaced a month ago), I had to remove the whole front portion of the exhaust header in order to get at the bolts for the starter, but once I got the exhaust off, it was very simple.

There is a plastic cover over the starter bolts, how do I remove this? The crossmember is too close to allow me to remove this plastic. It appears that I have to lift the motor.

It doesn't say you need to lift the engine. Did you remove the flywheel cover? It's bolted on. Once you take that off you should be able to get to the starter bolts.
Saturday the starter was working, the next day it failed. I finally got the car started, got it home. I had washed the motor a few days ago, maybe water had gotten in the starter drive.
I lifted the motor about 3 inches as I could not access the rear starter bolt otherwise, the rear bolt is longer and would have hit the cross member. There is no access hole through the cross member.
This is easy to do with a motor hoist.
