ok since i put the old air cleaner back on and fixed the air cleaner temp sensor ive noticed when my car is in gear and im stopped at like a stop sign or somthing of the sort, the engine idles really low almost like it wants to cut out and stall... does this mean my idle mixture is too rich or too lean? ive done some research and every web site i look at tells me to not touch my Qjet or i'll just cause more problems, could this problem be related to the diesling i've been experiancing when i turn the car off? Other then those two problems it runs like a top, just rolled over to 61K last night :D any help much appreciated

dieseling is usually caused by carbon buildup over the years... The carbon stays red-hot after you turn the key off, and ignites the fuel vapour, acting as the spark plug would have with the key on. Runs just like a diesel engine (hence the term dieseling).

I got my 84 caprice to stop dieseling by running the AC Delco internal combustion chamber cleaner through, and taking it for a long, 22 hour round trip to see some relatives. By the time I got back, there was no more carbon and crap in my cylinder walls, and the car ran better, didnt diesel, and I had more power.

Just my solution to the dieseling problem...

Can't dieseling also be caused by the timing being advanced too far?

Yes it can, and judging by the year of the car, I think that car has the nylon timing gear, unless it has been changed. I have seen the timing chain jump on those and still run. Are you running hot at all? Timing advanced too far will make the engine run hotter than normal. If you havent touched the timing chain, it may be something worth looking into because that nylon can get to the pan where it can cause all kinds of problems by plugging your oil sump.

Hello everyone,

It can also be caused by running with regular gas if it's supposed to use premium.

Retarded timing will make the engine run hotter.

Doesn't sound like cam timing to me.

Brianritchie21787:
Unless the distributor is loose or someone moved it, it's not the problem.

Never f**k with a carb unless you know what you are doing. Carbs seldom have problems but get blamed for everything.

Double check all vacuum hoses. Check plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

Spray about half a can of aerosol carb/injection cleaner around the inside of the carb, and then make a run (WOT on the on ramps) down the highway.

Hi andrewk, All,

The art of troubleshooting is not only to find what fits the symptoms in general, but to eliminate what does not fit the actual problem. Shortens the list of parts to check for proper operation.

Trying to diagnose problems over the internet doesn't make it any easier. The tech that could use the proper terminology, and description, would have repaired it instead of posting. It used to be called "Catch 22".

If my above suggestions do not stop the dieseling, it's part of the overall problem. If they don't, it will make the idle problem easier to deal with.

Regards, Norm
