I didn't mean to step on hallowed ground there. I didn't say it performed like a V8

You didn't. I made a simple statement. You did not read what was there, but what you thought was there.

Would you like to read it again?

Tone comes from the exhaust system, not from the number of pistons in the engine.

V8 rumble? Shaking windows? The sound is there?

Norm, it appears I've hit a nerve with this. Please forgive my foolish transgression against you, O knower of engines. I will scourge myself to atone for daring to speak of the hallowed V8.

Look at 87Delta's post. He understood what I meant. Just a thought, do the 1.3-liter V8's used in racing during the 50's/60's sound like V8's, or are they also transgressors, daring to speak of holy things?

I pray that my words reach you on that high horse.

Hit a nerve? Why do you think so? Why are you so defensive about a simple statement?

Instead of waxing poetic, maybe you'd like to tell us how/why your 6 can sound like a V8.

Forgive what? Hallowed V8?

Why do you keep trying to make it more than it is?

Here it is again.

It's a simple comment. Nothing more, nothing less.

In the spirit of discussion, I believe I've answered all your questions. If not, please point out any I missed.

I do understand what the exhaust sounds like, very deep. At idle it does sound slightly like a small block V8 at idle.

Norm, please take it easy on the man. Nobody can exactly "describe" a sound on the internet without an actual sound clip. I know it may bother you, but please let it go.

Thanks, 87Delta. That's all I meant.

Norm, seriously, no offense. My "poetic" comment was indeed sarcastic, but only in response to your arrogant one.

On another subject, if I have more technical questions, which would not be related to the original subject, would it be better to post them here, or start a new page?

His and yours, or a V8? His and yours sound alike? OK, I don't have a problem with that.

They sound nothing like any V8.

87Delta wrote:

Do V8s go "pop, pop, pop"?

87Delta wrote:

OK, I understand deep. Deep could be a 4 cylinder at low RPM. Deep doesn't make it sound like any V8.

87Delta wrote:

Slightly? It does, or it doesn't.

A small block V8 sounds like a V8. A big block V8 sounds like a V8. Nothing else sounds like a V8.

A V8 can be made to sound like a V10, but a V10 cannot be made to sound like a V8.

87Delta wrote:

As they are normally presented, sound clips of exhausts are pretty much useless. One might be able to tell the difference between a V8 and a Harley Davidson V2, but not with my speakers.

87Delta wrote:

Only asking someone to explain his own statement. If he can, we will all learn something, won't we? Isn't that why we are here?

I'll try again.

Did anyone else notice, it was 3 questions?

I'll add a fourth. Do V8s do that?

Is it. that I'm so caught up in my V8 ness, that I do not know what any other engine sounds like? Should I be comparing my 12 to 1 468 to a V6 with a leaking exhaust?

I doubt if anyone is talking about my bone stock 307.

So... I need to know how this works. I understand a V10 has a different sound to it, due to the presence of 2 extra cylinders. How can the sound be emulated by a V8?

Norm, both me and Dankraft's V6's do probably sound alike, mine MIGHT sound a little bit deeper with a hollowed out catalytic converter and such, but should sound alike. You are right actually, no V6 will sound exactly like a V8. Our V6's have a deep sound. Mine has a raspy tone to it when you get on it and pops off the throttle. Could be many things, the gutted cat, leaky exhaust, etc... I have heard V8's do the "pop, pop, pop" thing after getting on the throttle to off. So, it isn't just a GM V6 thing.

So, now it's "not exactly". Will it be "only slightly" next?

Would it sound arrogant, if I said: No V6 sounds like anything but a 6 cylinder with two separate exhaust manifolds.

87Delta wrote:

Does that "pop" make your 6 sound like a V8 that has the same "pop"?

Did I say it was?

I wonder if andrewk's Kawasaki twin would sound like a Harley Davidson twin, if he punched a few holes in his exhaust. Should be easy, since they are both two cylinder engines.

Actually... It has sportster mufflers on it and a leaky crossover pipe (until the gasket comes in from back order)

When I am in the throttle, it is loud like a Harley Davidson (with loud pipes), but much smoother, like a Japaneese bike(Imagine that!). At idle, it sounds like garbage, but it sure doesnt have that "po-ta-to" idle that a Harley Davidson would, its more smooth sounding, much like a Japaneese bike...

So the short answer is sort of, but not really

In this rambling, I may have stumbled upon the answer... My lumina has a bad cat. converter on it. It is 'raspy' at idle. I have a new muffler, so its pretty quiet. My question is, do you think it sort of sounds like a V8 because its loud? And WTF does any of this have to do with your problem?

Andrew

No, you're right. My V6 sounds like a V6 and only a V6 :)

No, just saying, I've heard the pop on V8's as well. Does not make my V6 sound like a V8.

The distinct sound the HD makes, comes from its firing sequence. The crank has only one throw, and the cylinders are at a 45° angle. Its not possible for the cylinders to fire at an even 180° as yours does, and #2 fires right after#1, with a pause before they fire again.

They are a lot smoother than they sound. And until the Nips copied the design: Nothing sounded like a Harley, except, another Harley.

Or an inline six, with a "split" manifold or headers. An unblown M series Toyota would be a good example.

Fourth post at: http://www.oldsconnection.com/forum/vie ... php?t=2010

180° were first used in the ‘50s (that I know about) and are used on racing engines, where max power at high RPM is the goal. The sound came with the package.

The Traditional V8 sound (with a 4 throw crank) comes from firing 2 consecutive cylinders on the same bank.

Some of the “offshore” mfrs use an 8 throw crank, that has evenly spaced exhaust pulses. Makes it sound like an inline 4, 6, or 8 or any inline or V type with 10, or more cylinders.

With 180° headers, one primary from each bank goes to the collector on the opposite bank, so each collector sees a 4 cylinder engine, firing every 180°. The other collector sees a 4, phased 90° off the first. Same effect as the “even fire” V8, but much less expensive.
