Hi all,

My power supply in my computer is starting to get loud, and I want to replace it before it frys my rig. It a 3 year old e-machine, and it runs well, havent had any problems, plus I dont have the cash to build a new one. I am looking at a different power supply, but it has a 20+4 pin mobo power connector, and my mobo is still the old 20 pin.

Can I make this work? My dumbass already ordered the power supply...

I googled it with minimal results- I think the extra 4 slide off, but I am not sure... any help would be appriciated!

Andrew

Yes, I believe it's an unwritten standard, the extra 4 pins are removable from the 20 pins.

Just the fan is making noise? You can replace those with some soldering skills. It's a good 12 volt power supply now, you can test car radios and stuff...yellow = 12v+ and black = ground.

What power supply did you get?

If it happens to not be removable, you can get an adapter:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812101122

Or you could cut the extra off.

sweet. I got a rosewill case psu combo that had good newegg ratings... I like the case, and hopefully the powersupply will last me until I can afford to build...

Sadly, I ended up dropping 200 bucks... Case was fine and well, but then I needed a new drive, because these emachine proprarity faced drives will look like hell, then I thought, well, might as well get a bigger primary drive, since they are on sale, and then I 'blew' 40 bucks on ram for this mobo (pc3200) since I have a stick that went out awhile ago... Its like a drug, really...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811147006

they talk of grounding problems... can anyone shed some light on this?

18A on the 12V line doesn't leave much room for upgrades.

True... I would be getting a different PSU when I build... this is mainly for the case.

The funny thing about that second case i linked is that there is a silver one just like it that has no mention of said ground problems... I dont really understand the ground issue, but then again, i know just enough to get myself in trouble.

The other one is better, since it is 24 pin, there are two 12V+ lines, both 20A according to the picture.

My power supply was over $100, it's the heart of the system and it's not something to go cheap on, but if it's just temporary...by all means.

what do you think of the one with the 'ground issue'? Red herring?

Are you talking about the static electricity one? Static electricity and computers don't mix...it's not recommend to keep your computer on carpet...
