My '71 Cutlass 4dr HT just went to the body shop for the winter and now I have turned my attention to the audio.

I am installing Infinity Reference 6x9's in the deck and 6.5" in the kick panel (from OPGI or other supplier). My issue comes down to stereo location and installation.

I want to use a JVC KD-HDR1 but wish to retain the original AM radio in working shape. I also do not wish to mount this stereo under the dash. This means two or three good locations to mount and hide (under the seat, glove box or the trunk). The problem that this presents is a usable detachable faceplate. I have a theory that if I can get the connectors from JVC for the head unit and faceplate, I can build a cable to snake through the car to control the stereo.

Does anyone have any other suggestions other than the unit that Custom Autosound sells?

I doubt you'd be able to get the "connectors" from JVC, as you can only order the entire faceplate. If you're skilled with a soldering iron...specifically with small circuit boards, then you'd definitely be able to do it. You'd bypass the connectors and wire it straight into the circuit boards...where the connectors are soldered to. A common place would be to mount the faceplate on the sun visor...just a suggestion. Maybe mount the cd player under the seat, so you can still easily access the cd slot. I'm not sure how many wires the display requires....it's probably quite a few. It's definitely possible though.

Thanks for the tips, I have decided to go a different route.

I will install a Jensen MSR2007 head unit. The tuner/amp will go in the trunk but the controller is wired and comes with a 10' cable. I may get the Jensen extension cable if I find I need more length.

Then I will install an iPod extension cable from Cable Jive so I can have my iPod in my glove box when I want it.

I will get one of the 4x10" speaker sets from custom audio and remove the 3.5" speakers and use Infinity Kappa 3.5" for the dash then the Kappa 6x9" for the rear deck.

For an amplifier I will install the Infinity Reference 475A to give me volume.

I will get some pics posted in the spring when it is complete. The car is in for body restoration (Interior will be next winter) so I cannot do it now.
