Well...the starter went kaput on the toro....the brushes are bad, and I can't find replacements anywhere....seems this starter wasn't meant to be rebuilt. Might have found a used Tecumseh starter that I could use parts from on eBay, we'll see (it's real cheap, no bids so far).

But, we needed a lawn mower now, because the grass is getting long, so add this to the list of outdoor power equipment:

Craftsman 6.75HP 21" Lawn Mower (both recoil and electric start)
Model #: 917.370733

Real nice lawn mower...haven't used it yet since it rained, but it's got a lot of cool features.

Hopefully I can get the Toro up and running to have as a back up. The starter gave me troubles before, I knew it was going.....a brand new starter costs $190....

Why in hell would you need an electric starter on a push mower? They are very easy to pull. Must be for super lazy people...

yep....my mom likes the electric start, I won't say I don't either....It's self propelled...no pushing...

Oh yea....I guess I forgot to mention the Toro has no recoil backup....electric start is the only way to start it.

Picked up a Snowblower from the side of the road....free

Craftsman Eager 1 Snowblower - 5HP Tecumseh engine and 20" wide. Apparently it's from 1976...30 years old and it still runs great! Mice had chewed off the insulation from the coil wire...so put some electrical tape over that (they had a nest in the blower housing.... ), and cleaned the carb out. Carb needs a little adjusting/tuning (rebuild) but overall it's in pretty good shape. Drained the dark black oil and put some fresh stuff in it. Needs a little grease too....definately wasn't used much and must have been stored in a garage most of its life.

Oh yea...and it has an electric starter... It starts on the FIRST pull though!! 8-)

Rebuilt the carb on the snowblower today, and tuned it of course. Replaced the belt and greased the chains too. Works great now.

I've got a 3.5hp briggs quantum mower, that I inherited. It runs (just barely), and does the job of cutting my lawn ok I guess... :-)

The only problems with the mower are this: After I finish cutting the back yard lawn, I look back and the whole yard is covered in a thick blue smoke. When I throttle up or down, or hit a patch were the mower has to push hard, it knocks like hell. It uses a full tank and a bit to cut my average size city lawn.

Not a bad mower indeed. ;-) I need a new one badly.

Does it smoke like this?

:D

The person in the picture isn't me, twas the friend I gave my push mower to. Actually gave it to him in 05'. Was only 3 years old and the rings gave up. So we had some fun and dumped 2 quarts of oil in it. Funny thing is, it still runs.

Just thought of this... When it starts to get cold, re-tune your carb. Warm ambient air and cold ambient air temperatures will really mess with the main and idle jet settings on all small engines. Just something to keep in mind, I usually re-tune a few a year from people that fix their snow stuff in the summer, and cant figure out why it runs so shitty...

Just bought this the other day...
Image
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product. ... Cookie=Yes

It has great power (compared to my old electric one) and it's still light enough that I can carry it up a ladder to get it up on the roof (got some serious mold/mildew growing on the shaded side of the house) This pressure washer is making short work of it!

The next step up was only 50 psi more, the same exact gallons per minute, in a much bulkier machine: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product. ... Cookie=Yes

Broke my snow blower...not the first time...LOL

Previously, I've broken: the chain that drives the impeller, the shoulder bolt that keeps the tension sprocket in place (impeller chain), belt, and now this:

Oh yea, before I broke it I converted the points ignition to electronic with the Mega-Fire II ignition kit.

It no longer starts with pull start...I have to use the electric starter. Is this normal? I took the spark plug out and noticed that when running the starter, it doesn't begin to spark until it's been turning for a couple seconds...which is impossible to do with the recoil start.

Took longer than I expected to install...had to take the flywheel off.
Thinking I probably should have just installed new points and condenser...oh well.

Any experience with these kits Andrew?

That's the down fall of those mega fire kits- They need to have the capacitors charged up before they'll start firing, and it takes the electricity being generated from the magneto to do it. It takes a bit to get enough juice built up to fire the module.

No real way around it that I know of, which is why I haven't been advocating their use for a pull start application. I don't know of a better product either, other than a new set of points/condenser.

And better that those pins broke out than something else- Should be a relatively easy fix for you.

Yea, definitely a good thing it was only the pins...the key that goes on the shaft for the collar holding the pins is discontinued.

I guess they can only produce parts for a snow blower from 1976 for so long...lol
