Hi accelerate88, hello all
Quote: .............. Yes those are stock rims................ Is the pic reversed or are they on backwards? Quote: ................. Two weeks ago I dyno'd it at 210 fwhp and 272 fwtq. Thats 262hp and 340 ftlb .............
Why two sets of numbers and how are they related?
What does it do in the quarter mile?
Speedy: Don't try to compare apples to oranges, it gets too confusing.

you need to multiply the torque by 2 or something and then it looks like calculated power at the wheels.
Series 2 L67's are underrated.

Hi Hans, all,
800X600 would be a better size to post on this type of forum, although 56K people might appreciate a smaller size yet.
I have no problem as I right-clicked on it, clicked "adblock" and its gone forever.
Quote: you need to multiply the torque by 2 or something and then it looks like calculated power at the wheels.............. Looks like mathematics have changed since I went to school. Quote: I know its hard to compare two cars just by HP, Torque and weight, there is alot of other varibles, but...
Anyone ????????
I, also, would like to know more about those dyno figures. Facts are always appreciated.
Timeslips I understand.
Regards, Norm

Fixed, and I have to say...I don't quite understand this fuzzy math either...please explain. 8)

Hi Brando, all,
Quote: Fixed ............
Changed urls and made it show up on my screen again.
I don't think it's right yet because it still looks like about 210 HP @ 12000 RPM.
Regards, Norm

Sure Norm, I'll tackle your challenge, as I think I understand where you are coming from. Way too many variables comparing one car to another by simply stating published hp, tq, weight of car numbers. First off, manufacturers can fudge on their numbers. Second, what about gearing, tires used, driver? Like you said Norm, timeslips are a better indicator of a vehicle's ability, and those change with weather and track conditions. A heads up race would be the only true comparison.
Now to my subjective comments, to Accelerate88, you have a very nice looking car with a nice engine package. I didn't know the turbo charged 3800 series II could be had in any vehicle other than the Buick Park Avenue or maybe a special order LeSabre. That is good news for you. Those wheels look like a buick option too. When I was shopping for a car for my wife I looked at a LOT of '97 to "00 LSS's , LeSabres, GrandAms, etc. I know that doesn't mean I saw them all but I did do a little research and that's where I base my statements off of. At any rate, a real nice looking car you could be proud of. Why not take it to the track this spring and let us know how it does. I truly would like to know and think others would too.

Ahh yes the confusing dyno numbers. They had some excuse about why the RPM was doubling but I didn't quite understand. He said to divide the RPM on the paper by two. My car redlines at 6000 RPM. According to the dyno 12000 RPM. See what I mean? You must divide the RPM by two and multiply the torque by two. 209.4 hp and 271.2 tq at the wheels. That translates to 261 hp and 337 tq at the crank. My only mod is a drop in K&N air filter. All 3800 II supercharged engines that have bben dynoe'd have had over 300 ftlb of tourque at the crank. I think GM underrated them for insurence reasons. I've seen different 0-60mph times for cars with this engine ranging from 6.4 sec to 7.3 sec. Every source seems different. I will bring my car to the track as soon as it opens up.

Hi OldsGuy, accelerate88, all
Quote: Sure Norm, I'll tackle your challenge Not a challenge this time. Looking for information. Interested in what's changed since I last used a chassis dyno. Also would like the know why dyno pulls on a known combination, and the reasoning behind testing an engine using anything other than an engine dyno. One of the few things I do know is that Torque and HP numbers will vary from dyno to dyno and from operator to operator. Quote: ................ You must divide the RPM by two and multiply the torque by two ..............
You have to be joking.
Regards, Norm

The Supercharged 3.8 was never put into any LeSabre, it was optional in the Eighty-Eight LSS, Early 1990's Nintey-Eight, Park Avenue/Ultra, Riviera, Grand Prix, Bonnieville, Impala/Monte Carlo (2004-present) Regal (post 1997)

the reason he has to do "funny math" is that the dyno hooks up to a spark plug wire for engine rpm. what none of you have yet realised is that those engines use a "wasted" spark ignition system with one coil firing 2 cylinders each 180* off from each other so one is ignited on the comp/power stroke and the other is sparked at the same time on its exhaust stroke. hence the 12000 rpm "redline" which is actually at 6000 engine rpm. just a little clarification fer ya'll
was looking through old posts and found this one and figured the info would give everyone a clearer picture of the dyno #'s
we will be experiencing the same stuff with the twin engine 442
however most newer dyno's can correct for wasted spark systems-so i am curious why they didnt print him corrected graphs-unless it was an old dyno and then it may not be that acurate-who knows.

Hi Turbocharged400sbc, all,
Quote: ............... most newer dyno's can correct for wasted spark system. ................
Thanks.
Now I know why only three coils?
I would have expected correct dyno sheets.
That answers one, now how about my other questions?
Regards, Norm

i'm not sure which question/s but remember how you calculate Hp from Torque and rpm and why ALL dyno graphs the Tq and Hp curves cross at 5250 rpm (which is the number used in the Hp calulation) i will have to find the equasion and post it fer ya. but the reson tq has to be mult by 2 is that the rpm's were multiplyed by two.
and the first q you had concerning the two doff #'s is prob a rough calculation between Wheel Hp/tq and factoring approx 20% drivetrain friction losses (this is always an approximation because every drivetrain is diff and manual trans have less frictional/power losses)
all that to calc a probable flywheel Hp/Tq figures
kinda like estimating someones height from 20ft away with your thumb! LOL close...but no cigar lol
1320 times are far more accurate determiners of a vehicles performance but even then you have to do calculations to adjust for barometric pressure/temp/humidity etc.
I can guess (notice i said guess lol) that the 442 makes close to 400Hp total right now but an ET/trapspeed and the vehicles weight would be a much better measure of the car.
till then "i just dont get any respect" quote by Rodney Dangerfield LOL
an apropriate quote i think lol
James
