Yea, I'm still confused on what body it is exactly, and I believe you are correct. X-Bodies are the little Nova things, that came with a 4 cylinder engine. This didn't have 4 cylinder as an option (thank god) and it's not as tiny either. It is a coupe, but not a hatchback...which I believe all of the X-Bodies were. Here is the closest thing I could find online to what it looks like: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 4533489093

It doesn't have any chrome trim....as far as I can remember, I know the grill doesn't and the bumpers are the plastic type.

Going by ebay, it seems that this year and model car is quite rare.... :-k

my buddy had one exactly like yours. Except it was rusting from the top down, ran like shit and was completely torn up inside. They could be a nice car for sure, the one on that ebay post was nice.

The biggest thing I remember about him and his car was that he tried to tell me that it had a "mustang motor" in it. I said... "REALLY? Someone went to all that trouble for this car? I asked to see it. He pops the hood and there sits the RWD 3.8l. I started laughing and said "this is a 6cyl, count the plug wires". "No, I know its a mustang motor, 2 of them are missing". I just shook my head and grinned. People are amazing.

This is the same guy that got stranded a block from his house in this old monte carlo, and said the motor siezed. I look at the dip stick expecting to see nothing, and a trickle of oil came out the TOP of the dipstick tube. He knew it burnt oil, so he put 4L extra into the engine so he wouldnt have to top it off so often. 8L of oil in a 4.4L V8 doesnt work so well... :-) Cylinders were all flooded in oil, everything was screwed!

To confuse you even further......

X bodied cars were the Ventura/Nova/Skylark/Phoenix cars, and not all X bodies were hatchbacks.

Heres a breakdown of the rest of the info.....
So what is a G-body anyway? Well, this listing is the most comprehensive I've seen and it includes the A-body cars as well. For the purposes of this website, all the vehicles listed on this chart are considered G-Bodies.

G-body:
1982-87 Buick Regal/Grand National
1982-87 Chevrolet El Camino
1982-83 Chevrolet Malibu
1982-88 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
1982-87 GMC Caballero
1982-88 Oldsmobile Cutlass RWD
1982-86 Pontiac Bonneville
1982-87 Pontiac Grand Prix

The similar A-bodies:
1978-81 Buick Century
1978-81 Buick Regal
1978-81 Chevrolet El Camino
1978-81 Chevrolet Malibu
1978-81 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
1978-81 GMC Caballero
1978-81 Oldsmobile Cutlass
1978-81 Pontiac LeMans/Grand Am
1978-81 Pontiac Grand Prix

NOTES:
1. There were no G-body cars before 1982.
2. The G-body designation came about in 1982 when the A-body line split
into FWD and RWD cars. The FWD's kept the A-body name while the RWD's were reclassified as G-body. (Kind of backwards- new cars/old name, old cars/new name.) Example: Buick Regal and Century were both A-bodies in 1981. In 1982, the Century went FWD, but still was called the A-body. The '82 Regal, while unchanged, was now a G-body.
3. The Regal, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, and Grand Prix were referred to as
A-specials (and G-specials after '82.)
4. The A-specials all received new sheetmetal in 1981. This helps to
confuse the A/G body issue. Had the name change coincided with the
sheetmetal change, things would make more sense.
5. Pre- '82 Bonneville were B-bodies.
6. Four door and Wagon models are included (i.e. Malibu).
7. G-bodies were produced until December 11, 1987. The LAST car was a 1987 GN. Some Monte Carlos and Cutlass's were sold as 1988 models, but were actually built in 1987. (Remember that model years tend to begin several months before the calendar year.) So during the last months of production, an '88 Monte could come the line, followed by an '87 Regal and then an '88 Cutlass.

SO......

Technically it's an "A" body, NOT to be confused with the earlier 68-72 or 73-77 "A" body.....

BUT, as far as interchangeability is concerned, it's the same as a "G" body......confused yet? :P

So therefore, rearends, suspension parts, possible drivetrain options and etc will interchange between 78-87 Cutlass/Regal/Monte Carlo/ELCamino etc...etc...etc You get the picture.

Now that we have THAT all cleared up...... 8)
