Hey everyone! Hope all is well with everybody. I have a 1985 Delta 88 Royale Brougham 2dr Coupe that has been owned since new. 168K miles. 307 with a 200-4R auto overdrive. Couple of questions: 307 is worn out, has always been a 'slug'. I am replacing it with a rebuilt '79 403 from a Pontiac Trans Am in an effort to keep it 'all Olds'. The engine has been rebuilt; still retains the stock 4A heads. Do not know yet if they have been shaved. I removed the heads for two reasons, to inspect the block/pistons and to have the heads CCs checked to see if they were shaved. The pistons are aftermarket and bear the following numbers...L3067F and separately 30. I have found that these are TRW pistons. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT COMPRESSION THESE PROVIDE but they are dished without valve cuts. I assume the '30' means the block has been bored 30 over. The 403 also contains a newer edlebrock intake, cam and lifters (which I beleive are a matched set of 'RPM Performer'), the cam specs are as follows:
Duration at 0.006" Lift: Intake: 280° Exhaust: 290°
Duration at 0.050" Lift: Intake: 204° Exhaust: 214°
Lift at Cam: Intake: 0.280" Exhaust: 0.295"
Lift at Valve: Intake: 0.448" Exhaust: 0.472"
Timing at 0.050" lift: Open Close
Intake: 4° ATDC 28° ABDC
Exhaust: 49° BBDC 15° BTDC
Centerlines: Lobe Separation - 114° Intake Centerline - 106°

I am looking for the 'perfect' set of headers for this engine. I had some Hedman headers (center dump) ordered from autopartswarehouse but that turned into a fiasco as they took my money and don't have them available. I will obviously install dual exhaust. My main goal is to have a 'sleeper' that is reliable and streetable while trying to be somewhat economical on fuel. Sure could use some help on what the pistons lend for compression, and what headers would be best for the engine and to fit within the confines of this body. I still want to run the A/C, P/S, etc. I am still not sure if I will run the 4A heads shaved or if I will swap for early 70's 350 heads...any suggestions as to upgrades to the current 4A heads would be great as well. THANKS in advance!

Hi wdcarmichael,

Welcome to TOC.

Quote:
........ Do not know yet if they have been shaved ........

Olds heads seldom need to be resurfaced.

TRW Forged .030" 403 replacement pistons.

If you will edit the above, to make it easier for me to read, I will be happy to continue.

Norm: Thanks for the information. As to your 'edit the above'...I am not sure what you mean but here goes...the compression that I am wondering about is what the TRW dish top pistons add or take away cc's in the chamber over the stock pistons and what the compression may have been changed by had the heads not been shaved (essentially taking the possibility of shaved heads which is unknown out of the equation). Maybe these pistons are direct replacement and the shape of the dish and the .030 calculate back to stock compression. Hope this is more clear.

I know if you shave the heads that you will gain compression, also if these were flat top pistons rather than dish top there would be a gain in compression. Just would like to know if there are specs as to what the L3067F .030 TRW replacement pistons add, subtract or equate to the overall compression mix.

Thanks!

Your use of CAPS, in that manner, is equal to shouting in our faces. Not only is it rude, unnecessary, and insulting, it makes it hard for some people to read.

When you are "logged on" you can see an "edit" button, next to the "quote" button.

The use of the all caps was not to be rude or insulting at all...it was to accentuate what information I was trying to attain. Afterall I had a large paragraph with a large bit of information. Didn't know how I might otherwise 'highlight' it in this sea of gray.

Your “intent” has nothing do with anything. If you wish to communicate with adults, post like an adult.

Which part, of the above statement, do you not understand?

wdcarmichael wrote:

Accentuate = potential confusion.

Questions and answers = accurate communication.

Simply use proper spelling/punctuation, to the best of your ability, and be prepared to answer any questions, you are asked.

Reread this post, then read the following, again:

http://www.oldsconnection.com/forum/vie ... 529f#24239

Does it look, to you, like I need “highlights” to navigate your “sea of gray”?

A body shop term, relating to door handles, etc.

"Milled" or "surfaced" is used by any competent machinist I have talked to.

Regardless, not relevant.

Relevant parts are either questioned, addressed, or clarified. Irrelevant parts are deleted.

WOW! You have some issues. What was a possible enjoyable experience in the renovation of my Oldsmobile and sharing information in the internet community on this blog and 'club' has turned into a dramatic Nazi-esque encounter on the etiquette of typing. Your determinatin of relevant and irrelevant is wholly, how can I say this...irelevent! Although I appreciate relevent information I do not appreciate how you deem yourself to be king of the website. Maybe you started this site, maybe you didn't. But your actions of ownership are rude and immature. All due to the use of ALL CAPS! I bid you peace in your remaining time here on earth. But please, consider that we are all mere earthlings and leave the superiority complex you have in your closet.

I find it fascinating that people who cannot read what is actually written, can read everything that is not there.

And, again, it appears that you read something, into my post, that I did not write.

It is a simple statement. It defines your childish attitude.

Nothing to do with any "complex". Everything to do with responding to what I read.

Good luck, in finding someone who is able to answer your questions.
