I beleive the version with electronic control was AVAILABLE on 1988 models (Also the first year to offer the 3800 "high output" engine, likely the mate to this engine). Mine still has the 3.8lSFI vin 3... I will have to verify via the oil pan, but I think I've got the old 440t4.
