Latley, my 85' has been runnin a little funny. Every time you open the throttel hard, it blows out alot of carbon (black smoke) from both pipes. I pulled the plugs and cleaned them, but it remained the same. I'm thinking its possibly the mixture and its getting too much gas, but im not a mechanic just an enthusiast. Any ideas?

If the plugs were really black after you took them out, it is possible you have over-rich carburetion. Now I'm not 100% sure if you can adjust on a 1985 carburetor (Not really good on the EPA emissions stuff) or it could be many other things to do with the emissions. May also be time to get your carburetor re-built.

Take it to someone who is. If its what I think it is, he/she will verify it in three minutes or less, and should have it repaired in about ½ an hour.

Problem solved. I spent a while looking for a problem, and it ended up being a vacum line that was not connected at the air breather.

ahh... so the air flapper valve was staying shut, choking the engine. Makes sense! :-)

Nope. When done right, a carb rebuild takes a lot more than a ½ hour. 95% or more, of the carbs that have been rebuilt did not need it.

I was thinking of three different carb related problems. One was a different vacuum hose than he discribed.

I suppose what you are saying Norm, is Guess Again ;-)

I dont think he was referring to the PCV line, or valve... Was he?

I said diverter valve because I remember having one vacuum line on the air cleaner of my 84 chev 305, and that was to run the cold air diverter valve during warmup.

Since it's fixed, it doesn't matter much, does it?

Malfunctioning PCV would not cause black smoke.

The position of the valve only determines where the air comes from.
