I've often wondered how much of a cost savings for the consumer would be at the pump, if a petroleum company ever decided to make and sell just one octane type of gasoline. The octane rating would be somewhere in the middle--decent enough for any gas powered engine.

I know it's pretty wishful thinking on my part.

Any thoughts?

Hi MysterHK, hello everyone,

Quote:

Since it would have to be a grade that everyone could use, I'd say 92 would be the choice.

The only difference between higher and lower octane gasolines, are the refining times.

Longer refining time = more manufacturing cost.

More octane at the pump = higher cost per gallon.

Price per gallon for a given grade of fuel would not change.

That comany would lose a large percentage of business to it's competitors.

Reference: Economics 101.

Regards, Norm

A lot of stations, when the "Blending Dispenser" came out would get rid of thier midgrade tank all together, in favour of one less tank, less piping, less confusion all together. The pump would then blend a mix of premium and regular gasoline (they can fine tune the mixture of the two also) to make mid-grade fuel right on site.

At bulk station sites, the newest fad is additive injectors. This takes care of marking purple gas and diesel, right on site, instead of from the refinery. I wouldnt doubt that stations in the near future will stock regular fuel only, and inject additives upon delivery to meet the requested fuel grade. I dont think they will limit the consumer to just one grade though. Just a thought ;-)
