Like the title says, finally got the courage to put in some 6 1/2's in the doors. They are Polk DB650's, decent speakers and I got them on employee sale for $65. It is finally starting to sound better. The door panels are crude, but work untill I get longer screws for the grilles. Also it was getting dark, didn't feel like messing with them anymore. Next step is 2 12's I'm hoping to have in next weekend. With all around 6 1/2's my sound is definitely more enjoyable, nice mid bass and plenty of highs for my heavy metal (blastin System of a Down and Chevelle sounds much better!) Enjoy... :D

looks aright, i did the same to my doors... lucky for you, you have power windows

might wanna try using a foam baffle behind the speakers, as water could get inside your door wether your weather stripping is good or not. speakers dont like water  i speak from experiance

Hi all,

Isn't foam placed inside an enclosure in order to tweak SQ?

Wouldn't plastic bags protect them better, without altering the sound?

Norm.

 Plastic bags would make tons of noise, noise you don't want.

While you also make a point, those speakers are meant to be mounted infinite baffle, not sealed up in a foam enclosure.

I would recommend that if you do get those foam baffles, cut most of the back away except for the top part and some of the sides (maybe a little of the back too) so that if any water does get in there, it just runs of the foam and SQ is not affected.

87delta, you didnt have clearance problems when you opened your window? i had major problems when designing my 6 1/2 mounts. I ended up creatively using a peice of 3/4" mdf to space the speaker that distance away from the window, and it worked good. ;-)

Your power windows are slow too? :-) Mine are just horrible. And they SQUEAL all the way up. Nice and quiet on the way down.

88D,

No real problems with clearance. It was a kicks and giggles thing seeing if they fit. I can bearly fit my index finger in between the glass and the speaker, thats it. Mount depth on the Polk's are 2 inches, and thats about what the distance it is from the door to glass. I am VERY pleased of the sound. Makes my goal of SQ much closer :)

Yep, my windows are very slow! Passenger front doesn't even work right. It got out of track one day and keeps breaking windows clips. It's funny to watch my friends try and put the window down and it goes crooked. Image

Did some more stereo upgrades. I replaced all the factory crappy wires with new 18 guage. Bigger then stock, but not outrageous.

My rusty, dirty floor

87delta, I spotted a circuit city credit lanyard hanging from the key. You pick it up off the street or do you work there?

The power windows in my custom cruiser are goofy too. The passenger side one is slower than the driver side one, so if I push them down together at the same time, when the driver's side one is completely down, the passenger one is sticking up a few inches.

And sometimes the passenger side middle window won't go up at first, I need to hold down the button twice.

Edit - Reread the OP, "Employee sale" is CCity jargon, and we certainly carry 6.5" Polks. I know the employee price on the 4x10 polks is 73, so I'd imagine the more popular 6.5s would be cheaper, in the 65 range.

Question, though - Why didn't you get our Kicker accomadations through ccity.com? I was gonna do 4x10 and 4x4 Polks in my car when our Roadshop guys said that the Kicker stuff was better and cheaper. Hopefully it gets here soon, ordered it last Thursday. It was something like $65 vs. $110 for four speakers, and the Kicker stuff supposedly sounds better.

Still riding on the assumption that you are CCity, what store number and department are you? I'm PST at 0734.

Well I USED to work there. Walked out cause I was givin bullshit. I was a CSA at 3638, but I usually was the only one in customer service in busy days (well, I worked evenings and nights) of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Doesn't matter too much since I'm moving 1,000 miles, so I was leaving one day or another. Hope your store is better.

I didn't get the Kickers casue I knew the mounting depth was to big to fit in my doors and the speaker gilles were ugly to me.

Yeah, for sure. I also picked up some boom-boom for free.

Yeah the one on the right looks screwed up. We gorilla glued a cone piece on the back to make it air tight and it works. I now have no trunk, but I can annoy my neighbors (not my main purpose, but it happens) I know Sony's, yeah not the best. But, it works for now.

P.S. Jeeze my car is filthy inside
