I'm looking for a drop-in replacement to the factory alternator. I need to run a second battery to power communications equipment, but want to avoid all of the extra hassle that comes from having to use a battery isolator.

If nothing else, I would appreciate any input as to how to determine what sort of alternator I need to be looking for.

Thanks,

- Twit

It almost sounds like an isolator would be less of a hassle to set up.

And a lot less expensive from what I read....

I like the idea of a direct replacement, because it saves me from all of the hassle of having to relocate the starting battery to the trunk. It was hard enough running 4 gauge through the cabin to support the deep cycle. I don't want to also have to run two pair of 2/0 cable there because I need to relocate the main battery in order to have a place to put the isolator.

I have no idea how to specify the alternator type that I need, so I don't have much of a way to compare prices at this point. However, with the total cost of: isolator, 2/0 cable, battery case, fuse blocks, connectors, and fuses- (not to mention self-labor) I'm thinking the alternator might be the best bet.

I'm more than willing to do my own sourcing, but need help with determining the specific type of alternator that I need. (Of course, if anyone has a link to a direct replacement for dual output, I'd be appreciative of that too.)

I appreciate the responses, and believe me: If cost and labor involved with putting in a dual output alternator is prohibitive, I wont' be doing it. I just don't want to pick one or the other until I have a better handle on which one would have the least expense, and the least labor impact.

are you wanting to install a second alternator, or ONE alternator with TWO outputs? I've never actually heard of the latter...

yea, I've seen many multiple alternator installations, two being the common number. I've also seen higher output alternator installations.

I searched google a while ago on this topic, I found very little information. Some marine applications that ran around $800 for a "dual output" alternator which allowed two separate batteries. Ambulances and RVs also seemed to be a common application.

I really think the best option would be an isolator, cheapest way to go.

Any idea on what kind of amperage draw you're going to have? Is the "communications equipment" going to be on for long periods of time with the car off?

Hi Twit,

Welcome to TOC.

So far, I don't see a reason to use either one. The answers to Brando's questions, will probably change my mind.
