i just got my olds d88 r registered yesterday... i was driving it for the first time in over a year and im hearing a sqeeking noise coming from the speedometer, is this an indication that my speedo cable is about to snap? and how difficult is it to fix this if thats the case?

another question i have is when i have wide open throttle, the charge+ light comes on the instrument panel when the car is changing gears, i can imagine its nothing critical, maybe a bad relay? i dont know, does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

any input much appreciated

-Brian

sounds like the charge+ is "TOO MUCH VOLTAGE" when you switch gears, your engine is likely revving quite high, and I would almost think that the regulator in your alternator isnt limiting the voltage you are producing...

Might be time for a new alternator. Depending on what kind of over voltage you are producing, you could fry some electronics, or worse, an electrical fire. I would protect any stereo equipment you run until you fix the problem, just for good measure.

thanks, that would suck to burn out my stereo equipment  i was actually considering rebuilding my alternator with chrome pully/fan/and brackes to dress up the engine compartment, but i guess it i'll just replace the whole thing :P

Or you could just replace the internal regulator...

Hi Brianritchie21787, hello all

Do both go away after it warms up?
Do you think the squeak might be coming from the alternator belt, not the speedo?

Might be a coincidence but a belt adjustment is quick and cheap.

I've always tested and verified a part was bad before replacing it.
